The 482nd Fighter Wing hosted the Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart Service Academy Day on Saturday for local high school students interested in attending university-level U.S. Armed Forces service academies.

Approximately 15 students and their families met with representatives from the Air Force, Coast Guard, U.S. Military, Naval and Merchant Marine academies at the Heritage Hall Training and Conference Center to discuss and learn about the educational and career opportunities available at the respective academies.

The event was also geared toward educating students on the service academies and to provide more information on public service and the military in general.

"I'm humbled each and every time I'm in the company of a servicemember, and each of you should be commended for considering this path, said Representative Diaz-Balart during the welcoming remarks of the half-day event. "Military life is one of honor. It is a sacrifice that too many people that don't make it, take for granted."

Col. Randall G. Falcon, 482nd Fighter Wing commander, followed the Representatives remarks by welcoming the students and their families.

"I'm grateful to be here with so many young people who are looking to follow the path of military service. Although I'm partial to the Air Force Academy, whichever branch you choose will lead to a life of honor. I'm proud of you and of your parents, who are guiding you down this path," Colonel Falcon said.

Also in attendance was City of Homestead Councilwoman Amanda Garner to lend support to the event, and the Service Academy Day concluded with a tour of Homestead Air Reserve Base.
