Air Base Elementary celebrates 50th Anniversary

Teachers and students from Air Base Elementary stand during a ceremony recognizing the school’s 50th Anniversary Ceremony on Feb. 27. The elementary school was founded in 1958 on the former Homestead Air Force Base for children of military families. After Hurricane Andrew in 1992, the school's population dwindled and a federal magnet grant was awarded in the summer of 1995 to keep the school from closing. As a result, an International Education Magnet Program was created at the school. (Courtesy photo by Eric Auffhammer)
