HOMESTEAD AIR RESERVE BASE, Fla. -- This summer the Single Airmen Program Initiative and RecOn programs are back at Homestead with deep sea night fishing, scuba diving, high-speed indoor kart racing and art for good events.
“The goal of these programs is for Airmen to meet new people who share their interests,” said Alice Fields, the chief of services for 482nd Force Support Squadron.
The Single Airman Program Initiative is for Air Force active duty and Air Reserve Component members without a spouse.
“We want to foster a strong culture, mission, and sense of community for our Airmen,” said Sheree Barrows- Chandler, the marketing director for the 482nd FSS.
The RecOn program is for the recreation of married Air Force Active Duty and Air Reserve Component members and their dependents.
“RecOn programs provide outdoor recreational outlets as stress relief for Airmen and their families using a range of high-adrenaline outdoor adventure based activities,” said Barrows- Chandler. “It creates resilient Airmen and families by fostering cohesive Air Force communities.”
“SAPI and RecOn have different target groups but single Airmen can go on RecOn events and attached Airmen can go on SAPI events, however priority goes to the targeted group of each program,” said Fields.
These programs boost Airmen morale by giving them the opportunity to try new things.
“These programs help us relax after a long, stressful day of work,” said Senior Airman Michelle Trindade, 70th Aerial Port Squadron customer service technician, here. “I found out I am more creative than I thought. I went to Puerto Rico last year so I did a painting of the tropical beach.”
These programs also offer Airmen the chance to learn useful skills.
“For events like scuba diving Airmen are first taught how to breathe with the snorkel and practice swimming in the gear before they go out to sea,” said Barrows- Chandler.
Deep sea night fishing is the next event slated for Saturday, June 25 at 7 p.m.
“I will be attending two more events this year,” said Trindade. “I think it’s a beneficial program for Airmen to use.”
“Slots for these events fill quickly, so we ask Airmen who cannot attend to let us know ahead of time to give others a chance to take those open slots,” said Barrows- Chandler.
Those who are no-shows, are no longer eligible to participate in future events.
