Hialeah Elementary School administrators recently showed their appreciation to Master Sgt. Richard Rios, 482nd Communications Squadron senior air reserve technician, by presenting him with a plaque for his dedication to their annual Career Day.

For the last five years, the City of Hialeah resident has used personal leave time to represent the Air Force Reserve during career days at both Hialeah Elementary School and Immaculate Conception Catholic School.

"It started because my Parrish is Immaculate Conception, and my two daughters attend the school. The school invites the parents to come in when they have career days, and I was happy to oblige. And I liked it so much that I also started volunteering to attend Hialeah Elementary School's career days," he said. From there on, they always welcomed me."

"Plus, my daughters are really proud of their daddy when they see me in my Honor Guard uniform," he said, laughing.

Sergeant Rios talks to the children about the meaning and history of the American flag; the importance of all branches of the military, and how the Air Force operates in cyberspace.

Sergeant Rios said he enjoys teaching kids about the military and communicating how the military is a viable option after high school graduation.

"For myself, I didn't want to go to college right away. I joined the Air Force back in 1969. But then I got out after five years of active duty and used my G.I. Bill to get my degree," he said.

"It's sad to say that this year was my last year representing the Air Force because I retire in December after 32 years in the military," he said. "But I love the base and hope to continue to serve here in a civilian capacity."
