MSST receives new commander

Lt. Cmdr. Bryan E. Clampitt became the third commander of the Coast Guard's Maritime Safety and Security Team Miami (91114), during a ceremony held at the U.S. Customs and Border Protection facility located on Homestead Air Reserve Base on June 11.

Coast Guard Capt. Scott N. Decker, Director of Operations, Deployable Operations Group, Arlington, Va., presided over the ceremony where Lt. Cmdr. Clampitt assumed command and outgoing commander Lt. Cmdr. Jonathan D. Theel relinquished command in front of hundreds of Sailors, Airmen, Soldiers and civilians.

Lt. Cmdr Theel is transferring to the U.S. Marine Corps Command and Staff College in Quantico Va., after commanding MSST Miami since June 2006.

As the commander of MSST Miami, Lt. Cmdr. Clampitt will oversee all functions of the 76 person team, which are heavily focused on the deterrence, identification and interdiction of possible terrorist threats against our nation's waterways. MSST's are highly specialized teams on the water that are extremely mobile and world-wide deployable. Unit personnel are trained in anti-terrorism/force protection and maritime law enforcement capable of afloat and ashore operations.

Originally from St. Petersburg, Fla., Lt. Cmdr. Clampitt enlisted in the Coast Guard in 1993. In 1998, he graduated from Officer Candidates School in Yorktown, Va., and was assigned to Group Cape Hatteras, N.C.

Most recently Lt. Cmdr. Clampitt was the Afloat Operations and Training Officer and the Doctrine and Standardized Section Chief at the Boat Forces and Cutter Operations Branch, Training Center Yorktown, Va.

He has also served previously as Alien Migrant Interdiction Operations Officer and Assistant Living Marine Resources Officer in Miami and commander of Coast Guard Station Channel Islands Harbor in Oxnard, Calif.
