Recently, the A-10 Thunderbolt II fighter jets have been seen worldwide battling killer robots and alien invaders in such movies as Transformers and Terminator Salvation. While these aren't typical foes for the A-10, they do showcase the power and maneuverability of these distinguished jets.

Now, the A-10, more commonly known by its nickname "Warthog" or simply "Hog," is the latest addition to the Wings over Homestead Air Show display lineup. South Florida residents can see and learn about the jet during the two-day event on Nov. 7-8.

It's the weapon of choice in blockbuster action movies for a reason.

The A-10 has served as backbone of the U.S. Air Force close air support mission since 1975, and its proven invaluable during past and current contingencies due to its combination of large and varied weapons, long hovering time, precision weapons delivery and survivability in combat.

The jet is specifically designed for ground-attack to support ground forces in combat. It can carry 16,000 pounds of ordnance and is equipped with a 30-mm cannon capable of punching through tank armor.

Other aircraft on display during the air show include: the B-52 Stratofortress, KC-135 Stratotanker, Navy Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS), F-16 Fighting Falcon, F-15 Eagle, C-130 transport aircraft, an Army H-60 helicopter, and many other vintage military aircraft.
