Pink and the military usually don't mix.

Pink was the color and motivation of the day as the men and women of the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Drummond, Miami Beach, Fla. participated in a breast cancer awareness run at the Sam Johnson Fitness Center at Homestead Air Reserve Base Oct.8.

The 20 sailors who participated in "The Pink Ribbon Run" ran on a pink treadmill for 12 hours in 15-minute shifts starting at 8 a.m. For each mile, Cybex International, Inc., the manufacturer of the pink treadmill, donated 10 cents to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

The Coast Guard is no stranger to Homestead ARB.

The base is home to U.S. Coast Guard Maritime Safety and Security Team Miami, and Coast Guardsmen from around the county take advantage of the award-winning fitness center.

"One of our duties as Coast Guardsmen is to support the community," said Petty Officer 1st Class Anthony Kaminski, chairman of the Cutter Drummond participation in the run. "This is a great cause and we are honored to be able to participate."

Other organizations will get the opportunity to beat the mileage the USGG amassed on the pink treadmill throughout the month of October and continue to raise money for the cause.

The Pink Ribbon Run is co-sponsored by Cybex International, Inc and fitness centers around the country can join the cause to support breast cancer research and education.
