Base makes final preparations for airshow Published Nov. 3, 2010 482nd Fighter Wing Public Affairs HOMESTEAD AIR RESERVE BASE, Fla. -- The sights and sounds of Air Force jets taking off and landing at Homestead Air Reserve Base are quite common in South Miami-Dade County. However, the sight of the U.S. Navy Blue Angel's blue-painted FA-18s is sure to amaze South Florida residents when the famous demonstration team roars into town for the "Wings Over Homestead Air Show" Nov. 6-7. For the second year in a row, the skies over South Florida will once again be filled with aerial performers during the free, two-day event at Homestead Air Reserve Base. The South Florida community will get a chance to see one of the finest aerial demonstration teams in the world and the 482nd Fighter Wing is proud they have elected to come to Homestead. At the end of World War II, Chester W. Nimitz, then the Chief of Naval Operations, ordered the formation of a flight demonstration team to keep the public interested in naval aviation. Today, the "Blues" fly the sleek F/A-18 Hornet which is now serving on the nation's front lines of defense. "Having the Blue Angels as the anchor for our air show helps to provide the message and impact we need to send to our community that Homestead is here to stay," said Col. Ross R. Anderson, 482nd Operations Group commander. Final preparations for the second annual air show are taken shape. As always, attendees will have the chance to experience everything from high-flying action in the air to interactive and family-friendly fun on the ground. Last November after a 17 year absence, over 200,000 people packed Homestead ARB's flightline to enjoy the return of the air show. Air show organizers believe the 2010 show will be an even bigger event that will attract larger crowds. Gates open at 8 a.m., however no one will be admited after 3 P.M.
