More than 80 members of the U.S. Coast Guard Maritime Safety and Security Team Miami were welcomed back to Homestead ARB, Fla., by local military and government officials and their families after completing a 180-day mission to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba on May 13.

"MSST Miami is proud of our accomplishments during our deployment to GTMO and grateful for our opportunity to serve alongside our DOD service members at the Joint Task Force and the Naval Station," said Lt. Cmdr. Bryan Clampitt, commanding officer. "During our deployment we provided a constant maritime anti-terrorism/force protection presence in theatre and provided security for the courtrooms during military commission hearings."

During their deployment, they utilized their skills and expertise to conduct anti-terrorism and force protection for U.S. operations by using a variety of boats, weapons and tactics in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

MSSTs were created after the attacks of 9/11 by the Maritime Transportation Safety Act of 2002. The mission of these specialized units is to safeguard the public and protect vessels, harbors, ports, facilities and cargo in waters subject to the jurisdiction of the United States from destruction, loss, or injury from crime or terrorist activity.
