Seventeen commanders and support staff from various military installations throughout the state met with Lt. Gov. Carlos Lopez-Cantera and other state agencies here July 22.

The Florida Governor's Base Commanders Meeting was developed to bring together state agencies with all military base commanders to enrich the relationship between the state and the military.

This relationship helps protect vital national security interests, enhance Florida's defense economy, provides family support and addresses quality of life issues for service members in Florida, according to the Florida Department of Military Affairs.

The meetings generally focus on four areas, but are not limited to:

- Encroachment and land use
- Transportation and infrastructure
- Energy
- Quality of life and family support issues

Meetings are not statutorily directed but are conducted to ensure state agencies and base commanders make routine contact over state issues and to provide a direct forum to resolve those issues. The adjutant general of Florida serves as senior military advisor to the governor and moderates the meetings in conjunction with the host installation commander.

Before being appointed as lieutenant governor in January 2014, Lopez-Cantera was the property appraiser of Miami-Dade County.
