"Conserve Today - Secure Tomorrow" is the theme for Earth Day, April 22, on Air Force installations around the world. This year, the Air Force is highlighting recycling programs.

Last year the Homestead ARB recycling program diverted 56 percent of the solid waste set to go to landfill by recycling, reuse and donation. Ninety-nine percent of construction and demolition debris were also prevented from disposal by recycling.

The program saved the Air Force $130,000 in additional waste disposal costs and made a profit of just over $40,000; half will be donated to the men and woman of the 482nd Fighter Wing for Moral Welfare and Recreation programs.

Highlighting the Air Force 2015 Earth Day are sustainability programs. These programs include energy conservation and use of renewable energy sources, effective water resource management, pollution prevention and reduction in the use of hazardous chemicals.

Also the use of innovative environmentally friendly technologies in design, construction, landscaping and facilities sustainment, restoration and modernization.
