Summer in South Florida offers up many outdoor adventure opportunities and the 482nd Fighter Wing Safety Office is on a mission for zero mishap both on and off-duty between Memorial Day and Labor Day.

The Air Force implemented the overarching "Quest for Zero" program designed to mitigate summer month mishaps.

The list of pertinent safety topics to highlight during these months includes such as fireworks, grilling, boating, swimming and traveling. Motorcycle and POV safety continues to be a concern for the safety office.

"Motorcycle safety continues to be a big point for us here," said Leroy Smith, 482nd Fighter Wing ground safety manager. "Motorcycle deaths have been higher this fiscal year currently at 14, and we want to encourage everyone to be safe out there."

Safety also includes being vigilant of dangers that include human trafficking.

Recently, a military dependent was involved in an incident where a van pulled up behind their vehicle and started honking while a man ran up to her window and insisted they get out of the vehicle. Refusing to get out of the vehicle, the scene attracted the attention of local law enforcement.

The incident, which took place in South Florida, resulted in the discovery that the men were involved in a human trafficking ring.

"This demonstrates that even when not in a deployed environment, we must remain vigilant of threats," said Lt. Col. Peter S. Smith, 482nd FW Safety chief.

"We keep an open door, open line, no threat policy at our office and we're here to help," said Smith during the July Unit Training Assembly Commander's Call held in the Fitness Center. "Think safe and be safe."

The Safety Office reached at extension 786-415-7333. Their office is located in building 360 to next to the command post.
