On the 24th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, Homestead Air Reserve Base and Special Operations Command South held solemn tributes to honor the lives lost and the heroes who answered the call that day.

The Homestead Fire Department began its tribute with a ceremony honoring all those who lost their lives on 9/11, including the 343 firefighters who died while selflessly working to save others. In attendance were firefighters from Homestead ARB, military members, civilians, and dependents. Following the ceremony, all participants joined in a one-mile memorial walk, with the firefighters completing the march in full gear. The event continued with a firefighter physical challenge designed to reflect the grit, endurance, and sacrifice of the firefighting profession.

“Twenty-four years ago, our world and our country changed in a way we never thought possible due to senseless acts of terrorism. Generations to come have been affected. As we reflect upon the loss of thousands of people that day, we should also remember the hours and days that followed, when this great country came together in a way not seen for decades. At Homestead, we strive to live that same sense of purpose every day. Thank you for what you do,” said Col. Brandon Kelly, 482d Fighter Wing commander.

Earlier in the morning, SOCSOUTH hosted its annual 9/11 Memorial Day Cup. The event opened with remarks and an invocation by a chaplain, followed by a fitness challenge that tested participants’ strength and teamwork. The morning concluded with a trophy presentation, a moment of silence, and a group photo, underscoring the unity and resilience of those who serve.

Airmen, Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, Guardians, and local community members stood side by side at both events, reflecting on the legacy of service and courage forged on that day.

As the nation remembers the victims and heroes of 9/11, Homestead ARB and SOCSOUTH reaffirm their commitment to mission readiness and the defense of the American people.
