During a brief change of command ceremony held inside the Sam Johnson Fitness Center, Col. David Castaneda assumed command of the 482nd Fighter Wing from Brig. Gen. David Piffarerio on Aug. 2, 2020.

The ceremony was officiated by Maj. Gen. Brian Borgan, Tenth Air Force commander.

Castaneda comes to the 482nd FW from U.S. Air Force Headquarters, Pentagon, Virginia, where he served as Chief of the Combat Air Force Requirements Division at the Directorate for Operational Capability Requirements.

“Outstanding units recruit and train exceptional talent, and you are no exception,” said Castaneda. “I am proud to be a member of such a distinguished team and to serve our nation together.”

Before relinquishing command, and moving on to his next assignment, Piffarerio welcomed his successor.

“Col. Castaneda, I am very excited for you and your family. You bring to Homestead a track record of excellence, and a clear passion for mission, people, and their families.”

In a comprehensive yet concise speech, Piffarerio expressed gratitude to his Makos one last time, calling many by name.

“How do you capture all the amazing things this wing has accomplished, and the many thanks that belong to so many Airmen?” he said. “Leading this wing, and being your commander has been a distinct honor, and the best job in my Air Force career.”

Piffarerio’s next assignment will be Deputy Commander, U.S. Alaskan Command, Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska.
