The 482nd Medical Squadron welcomes the first female physician to join their ranks in over a decade Dec. 10.

Col. (Dr.) Kenneth Wright, the 482nd MDS commander, leads his unit by encouraging diversity and excellence.

“Every Airman brings a unique perspective that helps us achieve our mission,” said Wright. “The United States Air Force and sister services benefit when all individuals in our society are equally represented.”

Capt. (Dr.) Rachael Nambusi is a board certified family physician, practicing as a hospitalist at Gulf Coast Medical Center in Fort Myers, Florida.

“Since I was a little girl, it was my dream to serve in the Air Force,” said Nambusi. “I knew they would challenge me, and now my childhood dream has come true.”

Due to the national shortage of physicians the, Air Force and other military services are actively recruiting family physicians to fill empty slots.

Despite the shortage, the 482nd MDS was determined to recruit the best physician for the job.

“She’s essentially three doctors in one—a pediatrician, internal medicine, and hospitalist,” said Lt. Col. (Dr.) Troy Frazer, the 482nd MDS chief of hospital staff.

Nambusi was chosen for the Air Force residency stipend program, which provides additional yearly income to resident physicians for each year they serve. She was selected for the position because of her excellent grades, professional conduct and an interview where she stood out amongst competitors, said Frazer.

Nambusi is an accomplished physician who brings her skills to Homestead in January.
