    Airpower displayed at annual Ft. Lauderdale Air and Sea Show

    Security Forces Squadron recognizes top performers

  • Homestead Air Reserve Base was busier than normal April 26 when more than 100 children spent the day here with parents as part of the annual Take Your Child to Work Day. The event offered an opportunity for children to spend the day with their parent in their workplace, learning about what mom or dad does all day, as well as having the chance to peer into possible career opportunities for their own futures. During the day children and parents were treated to a parachute-rigging demonstration courtesy of the soldiers at Special Operations Command South, followed by a tour of a B-52 Stratofortress heavy bomber plane.     Base supports Take Your Child to Work Day

  • A B-52 Stratofortress takes off at Homestead Air Reserve Base, Fla., April 26. The heavy bomber, assigned to Air Force Reserve Command’s 93rd Bomb Squadron, Barksdale Air Force Base, La., stopped at Homestead for 3 days while performing aerial intercept training with local South Florida units. The bomber’s capacity to linger for long times over battlefields before delivering precision direct fire munitions has been a valuable asset in conflicts such as Operation Enduring Freedom, where the enemy has limited air-defense capabilities. Homestead was home to the heavy bombers during the 1960s when the base operated the 19th Bomb Wing, a component of Strategic Air Command. This was the first time Homestead ARB hosted a B-52 in at least the past five years according to airfield management officials here.
